{"id":15751,"date":"2019-11-06T11:38:05","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T09:38:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heakodanik.ee\/en\/?p=15751"},"modified":"2019-11-06T11:38:06","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T09:38:06","slug":"30-years-since-the-fall-of-the-berlin-wall-only-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heakodanik.ee\/en\/news\/30-years-since-the-fall-of-the-berlin-wall-only-history\/","title":{"rendered":"30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall \u2013 only history?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A conference at the end of this week in Tallinn will mark the 30<\/strong><sup><strong>th<\/strong><\/sup><strong> anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in the late autumn of 1989, which meant the end of the Iron Curtain and reunited Eastern and Western Europe.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 8 and 9\nNovember, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation\u2019s Estonian office, the Estonian\nInstitute of Historical Memory and the Open Estonia Foundation will hold a\nconference dedicated to remembering the event and thinking about the lessons of\nthis ground-breaking event for the present day. The two-day conference will\nbring to Tallinn a wide range of speakers, including historians, sociologists\nand NGO representatives from Estonia, Germany, Poland, Belgium and the US. On the first day, 8 November, discussions will analyse\nthe salience of the events of that year, drawing parallels with the past. We\nwill ask how to reduce cleavages in the current world, stand up for democratic\nvalues and take judicious decisions in conditions of technological \u201carms race\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nKonrad Adenauer Stiftung wishes to commemorate the 30<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary\nof the fall of the Berlin Wall with this event, which aims to showcase a piece\nof German history while exploring similarities to other independence movements\nand to apply the lessons learned to today\u00b4s challenges,\u201d said Elisabeth Bauer,\nHead of the office for the Baltic States of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nEstonian Institute of\nHistorical Memory\u2019s public relations manager\nSergei Metlev added that 1989 was the year it became totally clear that regimes\nbuilt on a violent communist ideology were economically unviable and moral\nfailures. \u201cThe fall of the Berlin Wall and the Baltic Way are the events that\nwere made possible by bold citizens who believed in freedom, and whose\ninspirational contribution deserves more study and documentation. The\nconference will help to understand the actual historical scale of these events\nand analyse what has been achieved over 30 years,\u201d said Metlev.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nsecond day of the conference, 9 November, will feature the Open Estonia\nFoundation\u2019s annual headline event \u2013 the Open Society Forum. The 23<sup>rd<\/sup>\nforum will centre on a discussion between former Estonian president Toomas\nHendrik Ilves and the Yale University professor Timothy Snyder, one of the\nforemost experts on Russia and Eastern European relations. Ilves and Snyder\nwill philosophize on the current world order, and building and dismantling\nwalls between walls and societies. Their conversation will be moderated by the\ndirector of the Open Society European Policy Institute, Heather Grabbe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ndirector of Open Estonia Society Mall Hellam said that the fall of the Wall was\none of the most seminal events for all of civil society in the 20<sup>th<\/sup>\ncentury. \u201cThis year\u2019s keynote speaker, Timothy Snyder, has drawn attention to\nchanges in society that divided Europe over a short time period during WWII and\none of the symbols of which would later be the Berlin Wall. Snyder has said\nthat history serves as a warning. At the forum, we will compare the events of\nthat period with today and discuss people\u2019s need and responsibility to\nparticipate in dialogue over developments,\u201d said Hellam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Timothy\nSnyder is a recipient of the Estonian state decoration, the Cross of Terra\nMariana third class. Three of his works have also been translated and published\nin Estonian: <em>The<\/em> <em>Red Prince<\/em> (2015), <em>Bloodlands<\/em> (2016), and <em>Black Earth<\/em> (2017; all from the Varrak\npublishing house).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference\nis by invitation only but it can be streamed live and on-demand on Postimees\nand Estonian Public Broadcasting websites.
