{"id":4619,"date":"2012-11-27T13:48:10","date_gmt":"2016-09-05T15:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/heakodanik.ee\/en\/2012\/11\/27\/populism-ineffective-in-baltic-politics-study-finds__trashed\/"},"modified":"2016-09-27T21:30:43","modified_gmt":"2016-09-27T18:30:43","slug":"populism-ineffective-in-baltic-politics-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heakodanik.ee\/en\/news\/populism-ineffective-in-baltic-politics-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Populism Ineffective in Baltic Politics, Study Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t<strong>A newly-published study of recent parliamentary elections in the three Baltic states has concluded that populist campaigning strategies held little sway with voters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe &quot;Populism in the Baltic States&quot;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tlu.ee\/files\/arts\/13018\/Popul9d7555b5b5efdda9e086164b8cc6dbeb.pdf\">report<\/a>, which was produced by the Tallinn University Institute of Political Science and Governance with financing from the Open Estonia Foundation, looked at parties&#039; use of populist tactics in the Estonian and Latvian elections of 2011 and the Lithuanian election of 2008.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\tAuthors of the report defined populism as &ldquo;action\/thought that puts people in the center of political life&rdquo; which, they said, could also be thought of as politics responding to the elite\/people rift.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\tThe study found that in all the counties, &quot;populism was mainly the strategy of &#039;newcomers&#039; or &#039;faders,&#039; but [met] with not very high success (in terms of being elected\/popular support).&quot; The report noted, however, that it populism was stronger and more effective in Lithuania, where &quot;there are clear and successful national chauvinist parties that promote statist governing and presidential regimes.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>\tDifferences in how heavily Estonian parties relied on populist campaigning were small, the study found.<\/p>\n<p>\tCriticism directed towards the opposition was mostly &quot;condemning any changes as those might derail Estonia from its present (depicted as successful) course; the only &#039;existing system&#039; widely criticized was in taxation policies.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>\n\thttp:\/\/news.err.ee\/politics\/d3fcb2b5-f1ee-4c60-85d0-0e790ee75e03<\/p>\n<p>\n\thttp:\/\/www.oef.org.ee\/news\/article\/a\/oef-presents-first-comparative-report-on-populism-in-the-baltics.html&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A newly-published study of recent parliamentary elections in the three Baltic states has concluded that populist campaigning strategies held little sway with voters.
