A total 43,137 people took part in the national community day on Saturday, including the US soldiers who recently arrived to Estonia to take part in military exercises, and even the historically Estonian Petseri area, now part of Russia.

“I grew up doing stuff like this so it’s a lot of fun for me,” Sergeant Matthew Key of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team told ETV on Saturday.

According to the organizers, this year’s turnout exceeded last year’s numbers.

The majority of activities involved cleaning up green areas and garbage disposal, but also brainstorming and IT help.

Interesting finds included two grenades in the St. Peter’s church in Tartu and a number of fridges in Põlvamaa county. Clean-up action in Petserimaa attracted 20 people.

New Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas was pictured planting trees, as was Urmas Paet.
